Let's talk Salukis

Is a Saluki right for your family?

While they are wonderful companions they are not for everyone.

If you want a family pet who will come racing eagerly to greet you and cover you with kisses every time you walk in the door, will gaze at you adoringly and do your every command then a Saluki is NOT right for you!

Salukis are at often times aloof and reserved, they can be picky about who they bother with and when. They are stubborn almost to a fault and if they don't want to do something you might have to get creative to convince them otherwise!

Salukis can be quite vocal, often communicating not with barks, but with an amusing array of grunts, groans, mumbles and howls.

Some salukis love to climb. You may be surprised where they may end up.

They are however very easy going and a great companion to spend a day hiking with or cuddling on the couch for a movie fest.

Their athleticism requires not only adequate exercise but a securely fenced area to do so.

Salukis get along very well with other dogs for the most part and many are cat safe.

A few things to consider are of course a safe fenced area to play. Salukis need exercise! They are bred for endurance running. They need a safe place to stretch those long legs. They can easily clear a 4 foot fence so that must be taken into account. Long walks and training sessions to keep them engaged and thinking are great but your Saluki will crave a good run.

They also can never be trusted fully off leash. That well honed hunting instinct can kick in within seconds of something catching their eye. And seconds is all it takes for them to race out of ear shot. Of course living in cities and near busy roads we don't need to tell you how disastrous this can end up.

Please make sure you research the breed thoroughly!
